The cover is the most important point in self-publishing! And you already know it. Your cover won't attract anyone if it's not suitable. Worse, it will drive the internet user away on Amazon. You know you need to delegate this task to a professional.

Here's what happens if you do your cover yourself:

TIPS: BEFORE UPLOADING YOUR FILE TO KDP, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS
Save the file as a PDF document. You must provide your cover in the form of a single PDF file, including the back cover, spine, and front cover, in a single image.
Flatten all transparencies. Otherwise, there may be missing or distorted content when printed. To find out how to do this, refer to the software documentation.
Embed your fonts. To find out how to do this, refer to the software documentation.
Remove crop marks, control bars, and template text. Crop marks are lines indicating where pages should be cut. Control bars are bands composed of a series of indicators used to check color balance during printing. Also remove any template text, PDF creation guides, or software references.
Make sure your cover image meets the minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch).
Optimize PDF files. This reduces their size and improves their transfer, loading, display, and printing.
Remove file security. Locked or encrypted files cannot be checked.
Make sure there are no missing or blank pages. Manuscripts with missing pages or an excessive number of blank pages will be rejected.

🔎 WHAT IS A COVER EDIT REQUEST?
A cover edit request is a partial intervention or change of an element on the cover. For example, changing the title font, adding an author's photo, removing an element from the image, correcting a spelling mistake, etc. A modification is not a total change of the cover multiple times.

  • Traditional graphic designers are not familiar with Amazon KDP's technical constraints.
  • The cover of a paperback book is more complex to create because it depends on additional parameters.

You will need to indicate the format of your manuscript and the number of pages.

⚠️ 4 TIPS TO AVOID BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGNER
1. A cover for a paperback book includes several elements in 1 single file (front cover, spine, back cover).
2. Ask if the source and high definition files are included in the sale price. You should have the files in high definition (AI, EPS, PSD, or Canva source). They differ from a so-called "exported" file (JPG, GIF, PNG, PDF).
3. Ask your designer if they use or have used images or illustrations free of any commercial use (premium).
4. Ask your designer if they have taken into account the number of pages in your manuscript. Indeed, the dimensions of the cover will depend on the number of pages (thicker or thinner depending on the number of pages).
10 TIPS FOR A COVER ADAPTED TO AMAZON
1. Your graphic designer MUST know the different pre-existing cutting sizes at Amazon KDP.
2. A cover is made up of the front cover, the spine, and the back cover.
3. Your description, biography, photos, book price, etc. should be on the back cover.
4. Your book title must be highly visible. If it is too small, it will be unreadable on Amazon product thumbnails (search results).
5. Everything written on your front cover must be displayed in the title field of the Amazon KDP registration form. So, if you have written too much on the cover, it will probably be harmful.
6. Depending on the niches and themes, there are colors that work and colors that do not work.
7. You have practical and customary colors depending on the literary genre.
8. Your cover has between 3 and 6 seconds to attract attention and convince...
9. E-book covers or digital book covers are different from paperback book covers.
10. For a paperback book, the cover and manuscript are two separate files.
