Site planning is a method of organizing and forecasting the execution of work by highlighting the various tasks and links involved in the realization of a work, whether it is modest or large-scale.
During the construction of a work, the project manager and the client are bound by the plans and specifications, contractual documents in which appear, among other things, the details of the work by different trades (plans: excavation, foundations, structure, plumbing, electrical mechanics, etc.) and the timeframe for the execution of the work in its entirety (construction schedule).
Any delay in the agreed-upon deadlines can lead to litigation and financial claims. Therefore, in order to carry out the planned work within the contractual deadline, it is necessary to organize the coordination of the various participants for each elementary task in a precise and detailed manner in a site schedule or provisional schedule. The more precise and structured this schedule is, the greater the assurance that the construction deadlines will be met.
The three most known methods of site planning are the following:

- Planning P.E.R.T. (Program Evaluation and Review Technic):
A graphical model where each step is represented by a node and tasks are represented by the arcs connecting the nodes.
- The GANTT schedule:
It allows the duration of each task to be highlighted in a graphical way, in horizontal bars. It offers the advantage of facilitating the organization, planning and monitoring of tasks for simple or very complex projects.
- Planning railroad :
Spatio-temporal representation of a construction schedule used when the location of tasks (or the position of different trades) is important in the scheduling process.
The GANTT chart or GANTT Planning is widely used in the construction industry for site planning because it offers many planning management angles such as
- visualizing and controlling the sequence of tasks, including tasks/activities conducted in parallel
- allocate and manage resources (human, budget, material...);
- monitor the progress of the project and control it with respect to the planned deadlines, either globally or individually.
