I use those references to understand the direction and create an original instrumental. I don’t recreate existing tracks.
If you only have lyrics, we can start there too. A rough recording of how you imagine singing or rapping them will help when you have a particular flow or melody in mind.

Do I need to know the BPM or key?

Can you copy a beat I found online?
